Campers participating in the Space & Rocketry course as a part of The Center for Growth and Innovation (CGI) program got a visit from The Traveling Science Show today. Miss Nicole from The Franklin Institute brought along a super fun show that taught campers all about how gravity in outer space affects astronauts.
First, campers learned about Sir Isaac Newton and his Third Law of Motion, which states that every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Miss Nicole explained that rockets launching into space use that same law to move upward against gravity and into the atmosphere. She even showed campers a Bottle Rocket demonstration!
Campers also helped demonstrate how astronauts survive up in space. They learned that due to the Law of Inertia, things that go up into space are forced different directions by gravity and in certain circumstances pulled into orbit around the Earth. Campers got to try on an astronaut suit and really feel like a NASA employee, too!
